A new tour to the Erzgebirge mountains of Saxony, to enjoy some more of the narrow gauge, plus standard gauge steam, and maybe even a vintage tram charter too. The date allows us to enjoy the one weekend of steam working on the standard gauge line between Schwarzenberg and Annaberg Buccholz, a line which only sees occasional use and which features a spectacular viaduct. We will also spend a day in the ancient, and once free imperial city of Nuremberg on the outward journey with time to visit Germany’s national railway museum.

 

OUTLINE ITINERARY

Tuesday) London to Brussels by Eurostar, thence onward to Nuremberg for two nights.

Wednesday) A day in Nuremberg to enjoy the DB national railway museum, the old town and perhaps the castle.

Thursday) Continue to Schwarzenberg, a town which lies in a deep basin at the confluence of the Schwarzwasser and the Mittweida, our base in the Erzgebirge region. Afternoon visit to the steam collection at the roundhouse, or the late Gothic castle.

Friday) Day visit to Chemnitz to visit the Saxon Industrial Museum (which includes some railway exhibits), and the Chemnitz Hilbersdorf steam museum – a complete steam depot.

Saturday) Standard gauge steam on the Aussichtsbahn to Annaberg, then DB to Cranzahl for the narrow gauge line which climbs to Oberwiesenthal, close to the Czech border.

Sunday) We will visit the Pressnitztalbahn and Schonheide narrow gauge museum lines, with Saxon Meyers in action on one or possibly both routes. I hope to also include the preserved station at Rittersgrun.

Monday) Private vintage tram charter (subject to confirmation) at Zwickau before continuing to Erfurt for overnight stay.

Tuesday) To Frankfurt then onward to Brussels and London.

 

Hotels

We will stay at InterCity hotels on the outward and return journeys, and the Neustadter Hof in Schwarzenberg. Tour price is £995 per person sharing twin / double room, with £125 single supplement if required The Schwarzenberg  hotel includes evening dinner, whilst the InterCity stays will be our usual B& B arrangements.

The price is based on exchange rate of £1: 1.17 Euro.
