October 11th - 19th

Autumn is a wonderful time to visit the Harz region. The narrow gauge sytem will still be operating a summer schedule, and we hope to be able to include a standard gauge steam run on the fascinating Rubelandbahn with its fearsome 1in 17 gradient.

Our Harz base is Wernigerode, which has a superb, almost fairy tale medieval town hall overlooking the central square, and our hotel, the HKK, is conveniently situated for access to the town and to the railway station. The hotel has become a favourite with our regular travellers, not least because of the splendid selections of the buffet style dinners!

Wednesday 11th ) Morning departure by Eurostar from London to Brussels, thence onward via Cologne to Wuppertal.

Thursday 12th ) Time for a ride on the Schwebebahn before we continue to Wernigerode via Hanover.

Friday 13th ) A special tour of the Harz region by a classic 1950s Saurer former Swiss Post bus .

Saturday 14th ) To Blankenburg for standard gauge steam on the very steeply graded Rubelanbahn - a line which is normally freight only.

Sunday 15th ) A day to explore the narrow gauge system as you please. You migt also wish to go back to go back to Rubeland to photograph the steam arrival there.

Monday 16th ) A morning visit to the railway works at Wernigerode Westerntor, followed by the dramatic climb to the summit of the Brocken, the highest peak in northern Germany.

Tuesday 17th ) To the medieval town of Quedlinburg, a real gem, where much of the town centre has been declared a World Heritage Site, and then we shall enjoy the rural Selketalbahn, very different in character to the Brocken line.

Wednesday 18th ) A final day on the narrow gauge.

Thursday 19th) Time to return home, via Hanover, Cologne and Brussels, arriving London during the evening.

We shall once again be using the InterCity Hotel at Wuppertal and the HKK Hotel at Wernigerode.

The tour price is £1145 per person sharing twin / double room, with £120 single supplement if required. This includes all travel with the group from London, excursions as outlined, and eight nights hotel accommodation, the seven nights at Wernigerode on a half board basis, whilst the night at Wuppertal is on a bed and breakfast basis. (Our regular haunts here are a restaurant adjacent to the Wohwinkel terminus of the Schwebebahn or a Brauhaus in a converted swimming pool!)

I hope you will decide to join us. Deposit £200 per person to confirm your booking please.
