A completely new tour for 2008 to explore the north eastern part of Switzerland, based in the city of St Gallen. Scenic highlights include the Rheinfalls, the highest in Europe, and medieval Stein am Rhein whilst we enjoy narrow gauge and standard gauge steam charters, plus a vintage tram in Zurich. As usual, a first class Swiss Pass is included to allow you that extra flexibility to explore as you please.
OUTLINE ITINERARY
Tuesday) Morning departure by Eurostar from London to Paris, thence onward by TGV to Basel.
Wednesday) Our first steam charter with the 750mm narrow gauge from Liestal to Waldenburg.
Thursday) We continue to St Gallen with time this afternoon to visit the cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site or you could use your Swiss Pass to enjoy one or two of the secondary lines in the region.
Friday) We head first to the Rheinfalls, then to the nearby old town of Schaffhausen, later onward to the picturesque medieval town Stein am Rhein before returning to St Gallen.
Saturday) An option to visit Zurich, the tram museum and / or a paddle steamer cruise on the lake.
Sunday) The museum line between Bauma and Hinwil is operating a two train steam service today
Monday) The steamy highlight of the tour, a day’s private charter with a 1902 vertical boiler steam railmotor from Zurich. Wow!
Tuesday) A day to enjoy the rural railways and scenery of the Appenzell region
Wednesday) To Rorschach on the southern shore of Bodensee (Lake Constance) for our final steam charter, on the rack line climbing up to Heiden.
Thursday) Morning departure to Basel and thence by TGV to Paris, and thence by Eurostar to London.
OUR HOTELS
We will be based at the Hotel Victoria in Basel, and the Hotel Weissenstein in St Gallen. Both are good quality hotels, and are conveniently situated close to their respective stations. As usual, the tour is arranged on a bed and breakfast basis, but with dinner at the hotel on the first night.
Tour price, based on £1=2.39SFr is £1195 per person sharing twin/ double room, with £150 single supplement if required. This includes travel with the group from London, hotel accommodation as outlined above, a FIRST CLASS Swiss Pass, and the steam railway fares. An early indication of interest would be appreciated, with £100 per person deposit, if you would like to confirm a booking. Numbers are limited because of the capacity of the steam railmotor!
